PLAKA AND MONASTIRAKI AREA

The historic neighborhood of Plaka, the oldest in the city, embosoms the Acropolis Hill on all sides. Together with Monastiraki, they contain an endless variety of antiquities of all eras. Ignoring its touristy side, Plaka is the last remaining neighborhood of the city that retains the neoclassical architectural style of old Athens. A walk through its winding streets provides a glimpse into the way people lived and interacted with one another in the "gitonia" (neighborhood), when everyone knew their neighbors and daily stop at a cafe was a ritual. Monastiraki on the other hand is a vivid quarter of the city and used to be a flea market area.
