THE TEMPLE OF OLYMPIAN ZEUS AND ARCH OF HANDRIAN
Completed thanks to the Roman Emperor and famous philhellene Hadrian, it was the most magnificent temple ever built in honor of Zeus and one of the largest temples in the Roman Empire. In antiquity this site was a beautiful suburb full of trees and plants that lay within the city walls - the ancient Athenians called this area "gardens"! Its dimensions dominate the area and will impress you!
Across from the temple stands the triumphal arch, known as Hadrian's Arch. It was built by the Athenians themselves in 131AD to honor Emperor Hadrian and to thank him for the completion of the temple of Olympian Zeus.
