This complex of Greek Orthodox monasteries is included on the Unesco World Heritage List and is one of the largest and most important complexes of Eastern Orthodox monasteries in Greece. Meteora means literally "middle of the sky", "suspended in the air" or "in the heavens above", since the monasteries were built during the Byzantine period on natural sandstone rock pillars. They are located at the northwestern edge of the Plain of Thessaly near the Peneios River and Mount Pindus in central Greece.
